Artists Showcase 2023

2023 was our inaugural 'Artists Showcase'. Stay tuned for details on the 2024 festival art exhibition!

Music and art lovers alike had the opportunity to see works by some of the area’s most talented local artists. With two established annual art exhibitions in St. Flannan's Cathedral each year, this new event brought the twin towns' artists and photographers to the festival, celebrating the extraordinary local talent of Killaloe and Ballina.

The art was on display in St. Flannan’s Cathedral for the duration of the festival.

Some of the talented artists who participated in the showcase are below.

Trish Taylor Thompson creates unique images that vibrate with life, energy and colour. Using a variety of media, she is inspired by the world of nature and music, painting in vibrant colours with the freedom of abstraction in tandem with the discipline of photorealism.

Áine Quinlan is a local artist living in Ballina, Co. Tipperary. She has been painting for many years and works mainly in oils. She focuses mostly on seascapes and gets her inspiration from the Wild Atlantic Way.

Born and raised in Scotland, Seumus MacFarlane particularly enjoys painting coastlines of the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Since moving to Ireland in 1992, he also draws inspiration from the many gifts offered by the beautiful Wild Atlantic Way in the West of Ireland.

She has exhibited in the the Burren, Limerick, Wexford and France and was a member of the Real Art Project Limerick in the mid 1990’s.

Sarah Langham spent her childhood holidays in Kerry and fell in love with its wild untamed landscapes. She has no formal training, but paints instinctively en plein air whenever she can. She has had numerous residencies at Cill Rialaig. Her work has been given homes in private and public collections all over the globe. Sarah lives in Portroe where she has her studio.

Andy McCarthy lives in Killaloe in Co. Clare. She has been painting and working in bronze for many years. Her work is in collections in Ireland, Britain, Australia and the United States.

Ruth Riordan is a full time professional artist working out of her studio in Birdhill, Co. Tipperary, close to the twin towns of Ballina/Killaloe where she grew up, on the shores of Lough Derg. Each of her paintings are finger painted using acrylic paint. This allows her to express herself freely and capture the energy and spirit of the natural world. Ruth likes to focus on colour and texture, which gives her work a sense of presence, and feeling of movement.

Kerry Acheson’s artistic themes change constantly, ranging from people, faces and animals to landscapes, still-lifes to abstracts. Her technique varies from oil on canvas to acrylics, watercolours, mixed media and sculptures. She loves experimenting with different materials and during lockdown she started working with drift wood.

Maeve Ryan is a self taught artist from Killaloe. She enjoys capturing nature in mediums of oils and acrylics.

Arek Baczkowski is freelance photographer based in Killaloe and Ballina. After years of working in various professions, he decided to fulfil his youthful dreams of becoming a photographer and enrolled in the School of Visual Arts at Limerick College of Further Education. Since 2019, he directs THE BRIDGE Creative Arts Centre in Ballina, where you can find more of his photographs. He loves to capture local landscapes and wildlife.

Nurturing a strong interest in creativity since childhood, Melissa Ryan grew a love for design, textiles and all forms of art.  Growing up in the bush in N.S.W Australia sparked the beginning of her artistic and textiles journey. Through her art, she hopes to engage the viewers’ imagination and evoke a sense of joy and wonderment. She paints using acrylics and oils, and creates textiles using upcycled and natural fabrics from her home studio.

Alun Hoskins lives in Ballina-Killaloe, the area and landscape itself often providing his inspiration, having moved west from Dublin in 2011. He describes himself as "an artist who uses a camera" with his style increasingly developing into "Conceptual Photography". He also enjoys framing pictures, having done so for 15 years or more.

Danica Farran is a Killaloe-based mixed media artist primarily working in porcelain. The physical properties of her works use the inherent properties of the clay, malleability, flexibility, memory and lightness to create the eventual shapes that  instinctively form the final piece.

Patricia Phumpiu is a local watercolour artist who found her passion for painting during the lockdown. Inspired by her love for nature and the urban environment, she has developed a particular interest in capturing the beauty of garden birds and the serene landscapes of the Shannon river and Lough Derg.
